Knossos is the site of the most important and better-known palace of Minoan civilization. According to tradition it was the site of the legendary king Minos. Knossos was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos.Arthur Evans conducted systematic excavations at the site between 1900 and 1931, bringing to light the palace, a large section of the Minoan city and the cemeteries. The Minoan palace of Knossos lies at a distance of 5km from the town center of Heraklion, along the road to Archanes. A visit to Crete would be incomplete without seeing this site. Afterwards, a stop at the center of Heraklion city, where there is the opportunity to explore, do some shopping, have a bit of lunch and visit the local market. Finally, a visit to Knossos must be completed with a visit to the Heraklion Archeological Museum, which boasts the world’s most comprehensive collection of Minoan art. A day appreciated by all!
